Did you know that releasing tortoises back into the wild or taking one from its environment is illegal? A group in Las Vegas works to unite desert tortoises with owners through legal adoption.

“Because all desert tortoises are still considered wildlife, they belong to the people of Nevada. So, when you adopt a tortoise, you’re not actually an owner – you’re a custodian or a keeper of the tortoise, and they can live up to 80-100 years in captivity,” Sarah Mortimer said.
